Exploring the Intersection of Journalism, Culture, and Society: USC Journalism Program in Sicily

The USC Rome Journalism Program, an innovative educational venture run in partnership with Accent Global, recently embarked on an enriching journey to Sicily, offering students a unique blend of practical learning experiences and cultural immersion. The program’s itinerary was thoughtfully curated to cover various aspects of journalism, communication, and societal issues, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the media landscape in Italy, particularly in Sicily.

A visit to Appress Communication Agency and SiracusaNews

During the USC Rome Journalism Program’s visit to Sicily, a key component was the trip to Appress, a prominent communication agency in Ortigia, where students gained firsthand knowledge of the operation and strategies of a communication agency, engaging with experts in media strategies and public relations. This experience was complemented by a significant roundtable interaction with journalists from Siracusanews, a respected online newspaper, focusing on the complexities of reporting on organised crime and politics in Sicily, thereby enlightening the students about the ethical and practical aspects of journalism in a region known for its intricate socio-political dynamics. Further enriching their understanding, the program included a session with both Appress and Siracusanews professionals, providing an in-depth look at how Italian media have historically portrayed Mafia and politics, specifically highlighting the representation of key Sicilian cities like Siracusa and Catania, and offering insights into the regional media’s influence on public perception and discourse..

Roundtable at Isola Catania

At Isola Catania, an innovative cultural hub in Catania, students met with Antonio Perdichizzi, the founder, and other representatives to learn about their unique approach to communication and storytelling. This session highlighted the importance of media in generating social impact and fostering community engagement, particularly in urban settings.

Chocolate-Making Workshop and Discussion on Modican Chocolate

In a delightful twist, the program featured a hands-on chocolate-making workshop in Modica, a city celebrated for its baroque architecture and chocolate-making tradition. This experience was complemented by a discussion with Graziella Minardi, owner of Dolceria Rizza, on the challenges and opportunities in the retail of Modica chocolate. This segment provided a practical perspective on product marketing and retail, essential components of media and communication studies.

Roundtable on Migration and Media

The program concluded with a roundtable led by Prof. Guido Nicolosi from the University of Catania, focusing on Migration and the Media. This session, in collaboration with C.I.A.O., a local NGO, offered insights into the role of media in addressing and shaping narratives around migration and integration, a pressing issue in contemporary society.
