ASU IN sicily: exploring Volcanoes, Earthquakes, and Resilience

Our Students’ Journey into Volcanology and Geology: A Summer of Discovery in Sicily

This summer, our students from Arizona State University took part in an extraordinary adventure at the Science and Society Summer Camp in Siracusa, Sicily. Here, they immersed themselves in the fascinating worlds of volcanology and geology through a mix of theoretical classes and field trips, all guided by local specialists. Let’s dive into what our students experienced during this incredible program!

Volcanology and Geology: A Blend of Theory and Practice

Our students spent four unforgettable weeks in Siracusa, a hidden gem of Sicily, where they deepened their knowledge of the dynamic science behind seismic activity—earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis—and explored their geological and societal impacts on the local population, cities, and culture. Sicily, located in the Mediterranean zone and known for its active geological risks, provided the perfect setting for our students to learn by living through these experiences.

The program took our students to some of Sicily’s most famous landmarks, where they studied volcanic and geological phenomena up close. One of the highlights was visiting Mount Etna, one of the most iconic volcanoes in the world. Our students hiked the Schienna dell’Assino path, which offers a panoramic view of the Valle del Bove, a horseshoe-shaped depression on the volcano’s east side. They learned about the significance of Mount Etna to the region, followed by an exclusive visit to a fascinating volcanic cave, where they glimpsed the underground activity of Europe’s most active volcano.

But the adventure didn’t stop there. Our students also traveled to the Aeolian Islands, a stunning 7-island volcanic archipelago in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Here, they witnessed Stromboli’s eruptions firsthand and explored the island’s natural beauty. This special week allowed them to research the unique geological features of the islands, deepening their understanding of volcanic activity and its impact on the landscape.

Volcanic Activity and Its Impact on Society

Our students didn’t just focus on the science of volcanology; they also explored the societal aspects of living in a geologically active zone. They visited cities like Noto, known as the “Baroque Capital,” and Messina, both of which have been shaped by the island’s seismic activity over time. Through these visits, our students learned about the history of these cities, discovering how they have rebuilt and thrived despite the challenges posed by their geological environments.

Throughout the program, our students engaged in both Italian and Geology classes, where they received top-notch instruction from specialists. These classes seamlessly blended in-class learning with real-world experiences, providing our students with a comprehensive understanding of the topics they were studying. Led by experienced guides and professors, all activities ensured that our students gained practical knowledge and expert insights into the volcanic and geological events they encountered.

A significant part of their journey was a technical tour of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), commonly known as the Osservatorio Etneo in Catania. Here, our students learned about the monitoring of volcanic and geological movements, as well as ongoing volcanic research, gaining valuable knowledge directly from the experts responsible for keeping an eye on Europe’s most active volcano.

A Summer Study Abroad to Remember

Our students embarked on this incredible journey to experience Earth’s raw power up close and personal. They didn’t just learn about volcanology and geology; they lived it. This unique program provided them with the opportunity to not only expand their knowledge but also to create unforgettable memories. The hands-on approach made the learning process engaging and dynamic, leaving our students with a deep appreciation for the subjects they studied.

The Arizona State University program in Siracusa offered our students the journey of a lifetime. They embraced the opportunity to enhance their knowledge, learn in the field, and witness firsthand the powerful forces that shape our planet. This summer camp was more than just an academic program; it was an adventure that our students will carry with them for years to come.
